Valuable work
Light-based technologies play an important role in the search for sustainable development and offer practical solutions to many of our society’s grand challenges in a number of fields:
Quantum photonics
- Quantum photonics devices to develop and construct enable quantum computing.
Photonics in communication
- Ultra-high speed transfer of immense data capacity using advanced optical fibers and optoelectronics devices.
- Quantum encryption for secure communication
Photonics in sensing
- Inspection of food quality and solar cells performance.
- Detection of flora and fauna for monitoring of insects in farming and biodiversity in e.g. water environment.
- Measurements of distances, velocities or vibrations to optimize energy production from wind farms, to inspect Young’s module of asphalt on roads, to detect drones and many other applications
Photonics in medicine and biology
- Short-pulse lasers for biomedical imaging
- Light to stimulate circadian rhythms, to prevent Altzheimer and Dementia and to disinfect without consequences such as bacterial resistance.
- Light and laser based technologies for diagnostics and treatment within medicine and surgery.
To successfully harness the full potential of light, we need continuously to improve our basic knowledge of light and develop new physics. This is crucial when developing new types of lasers and photonic materials.
