MSc Engineering Light

Light plays a crucial part in the development of future technologies – from modern medicine to climate-friendly methods of measurement. With a degree from the Engineering Light MSc programme, you will be an expert in technical applications of light such as laser, energy-saving light sources, and ultraviolet and infrared light, and you will be prepared to use your understanding of light to develop new solutions.

Engineering Light (MSc) video introduction

Engineering Light is all about light. We use light in our everyday life – not only as light sources in our homes or cars etc. but also when we use internet, stream television and films, interact with a tablet or mobile phone, or measure our heart rate with a smart watch.

For many years, optics and Photonics has been a key component or technology in many business sectors. Examples include a large variety of components for optical communication, 3D scanning and imaging technologies for both human and robot visions, lasers for a myriad of often multidisciplinary applications, photovoltaics for energy harvesting and light sources that are energy efficient, that disinfect air and surface, that interacts with your circadian rhythm to improve your sleep, immune system, the aging of your brain, as well as light and laser based technologies for medical diagnostics and treatment.

In the future, light-based technologies will play an even larger role when addressing many global challenges such as securing sufficient infrastructure for digitalization and AI, secure communication, accurate measurements of constituents in the atmosphere, inspecting quality of food and water or monitoring and helping to improve human health and biodiversity. We are constantly witnessing new applications and emerging businesses based on light, and the benefits and number of applications appear unlimited.
