Excellent research
Michael’s countless invited papers are a testimony to the level of his contributions to the field. One such invited paper was published in the highly regarded IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics in 2021. Here Michael is noted as the responsible author for an international team describing the latest developments within optical regeneration of wavelength-division-multiplexed data.
This specific field is a crucial component in making communications networks more energy efficient, as it will enable optical data signals to contain more data or travel longer than is currently possible. This could significantly reduce the climate impact caused by humans.
For a long time these technologies have been at the centre of Michael’s research. His latest interest for optical data transmission systems, which can be pushed into the non-linear field for optical fibres, whilst still transferring intact data, has potential to be of great importance for the communication links of the future.
Internationally acknowledged
Michael’s research is internationally at the highest level, and its groundbreaking nature has been noticed several times. Just last year, he contributed to the world record 1.8 petabit data transmission carried by the light from a single optical source. This resulted in one of the most quoted papers in the history of Nature Photonics. Michael also played a central part in DTU’s collaboration with Niels Bohr Institutet surrounding Denmark’s first QKD encrypted transmission last year.
Both of the above cases are examples of Michael’s excellent contributions not just to research but to the world, and him being an invaluable key employee at DTU Electro, where he also delivers enthusiastic teaching and acts as union representative for The Danish Society of Engineers.
