DTU researchers receive Villum Experiment Grant 2023

Villum Fonden is awarding DKK 97 million to 49 different research ideas that will challenge the world we know and get researchers to think outside the box.

15 researchers from DTU have been awarded a Villum Experiment grant. In total, they receive DKK 30 million to realise their research projects.

The 15 grant recipients

  • Senior Researcher Stela Canulescu, DTU Electro, receives the grant for the project ”Junctionless nanostructure solar cells”
  • Associate Professor Hao Wu, DTU Chemical Engineering, receives the grant for the project ”Synthesis of black phosphorus from biomass”
  • Postdoc Michael Seifner, DTU Nanolab, receives the grant for the project ”Nanoscale Imaging of a Photocatalyst at Work: What Comes After the Light?”
  • Postdoc Pritam Banerjee, DTU Nanolab, receives the grant for the project ” Stabilization of few-atom metal catalysts in 3D nano-cage architecture for conversion of CO2 into high-value hydrocarbon”
  • Professor Kristian Mølhave, DTU Nanolab, receives the grant for the project ”Imaging the driving force in electrochemistry”
  • Assistant Professor Yuepeng Dong, DTU Sustain, receives the grant for the project ”Optimise Building Heating via Solar-Geothermal Energy Pile System and Digital Twins – SGPile”
  • Associate Professor Mirza Karamehmedovic, DTU Compute, receives the grant for the project ”neXt-Ray: a super-resolution light engine”
  • Associate Professor Mikael van Deurs, DTU Aqua, receives the grant for the project ”Geomagnetic variations and fish year-class strength”
  • Associate Professor Sebastian Meier, DTU Chemistry, receives the grant for the project “Uncharted Pathways: Aqueous Chemistry Avoided by Terrestrial Life (UPACA)”
  • Postdoc Jie Meng, DTU Chemistry, receives the grant for the project “Visible-Light-Response Multiple Exciton Generation”
  • Postdoc Jaysree Pan, DTU Physics, receives the grant for the project “Can catalysts decompose robust plastics? (PlasticCat)”
  • Researcher James Webb, DTU Physics, receives the grant for the project “AXQM: Axion Dark Matter Detection By Quantum Magnetometry”
  • Postdoc Jeppe Ormstrup, DTU Physics, receives the grant for the project “Mastering of Metal Solidification”
  • Professor Jakob Mann, DTU Wind, receives the grant for the project “Automotive 4D lidars for monitoring of rotating wind turbine blades (4DLIDAR)”
  • Associate Professor Mikkel Bentzon-Tilia, DTU Bioengineering, receives the grant for the project “Eukaryogenesis reenacted - testing evolutionary models in miniscule droplets”

Villum Fonden

Villum Fonden is a private foundation founded in 1971. In 2021, the non-profit foundation granted approximately DKK 1.5 billion to technical and scientific research as well as environmental, social and cultural purposes in Denmark and abroad.

Villum Experiment

Up to DKK 2 million is granted for the unorthodox research idea, which is assessed anonymously without regard to the applicant's CV. This means the grant holders can be at all levels, from postdoc to professor.

The program is announced yearly in open competition, with an application deadline in March.
